What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in North Carolina?
As of July 1, 2025, North Carolina requires minimum liability coverage of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $50,000 for property damage. All policies must also include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits.
Do I need more than the state minimum?
In most cases, yes. The state minimum is the legal floor, not a coverage recommendation. A single serious accident can exceed minimum limits quickly. An umbrella policy is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your assets.
Does my auto policy cover rental cars?
